Greater Manchester Police have now arrested England footballer Mason Greenwood over allegations of rape and assault, MySportDab reports.

The Manchester United forward remains in detention after pictures and audio went viral on social media that he attacked his girlfriend.

The images showed her with blood and bruises all over her body.

There was also a voice recording of a conversation between two people which has also gone viral online.

Within hours of the news emerging, Manchester United put out a statement that they are making inquiries ‘to establish the full circumstances’.

It added: ‘Manchester United has never condoned such act of violence.’

Mason Greenwood’s girlfriend was interviewed by plain officers at her family home yesterday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester police confirmed that they had launched an investigation into the accusations.

He said: ‘Following inquiries, we have now arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of rape and assault.

‘He will remain in custody for questioning as we investigate.’

Yesterday, Manchester Police Forensic officers also arrived at Greenwood’s home mansion in Bowdon, Cheshire.

A few hours after the news went viral, Manchester United suspended Mason Greenwood from all football activities.

In a second statement, the club said: ‘Greenwood will not train or play matches for the club until further notice’.

Greenwood’s arrest has now put his lucrative sponsorship endorsement deal with Nike at risk.

Yesterday a Nike Sportsperson said: ‘We are deeply concerned by the allegations’ and will continue to monitor the situation closely.’

His girlfriend’s father told the Daily Mail that his daughter’s Instagram account got hacked.

Speaking from his home in Cheshire village, the man said the allegations was ‘dreadful’.

‘I’m just starting to understand everything,’ he said.

‘No father would want something like this to happen to their daughter. She is absolutely devastated, but now safe. It is now upto the police.’
