Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has now revealed why he decided to join the Red Devils over Manchester City, MySportDab reports.

Even a phone call from Coach Pep Guardiola was not enough to convince him to join Manchester City.

Manchester United signed Maguire in 2019 Leicester City for a massive £80m fee.

Both Manchester clubs were desperate to secure his signature, but the centre-back decided to join Manchester United in the end.

Speaking to Gary Neville, Maguire said: ‘The two clubs were interested, I spoke to Man City and Manchester United.

‘No disrespect to Manchester City, I grew up watching United play football. So the club has always been in my heart.

‘I spoke to Pep and about how they play and what he’s done for the club. I respect him very much and what he’s done for football, but I already made a decision.

‘It gave me great confidence for United to try to sign me over a 12, 15 months, they showed that they believed in me and how I would be a key player of the team.’

When United first showed their interest in Maguire, Jose Mourinho was still the manager before he was replaced by Club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Harry Maguire has also revealed exactly what Solskjaer first said to him when he arrived at Manchester United.

‘When I first time spoke to Ole, he told me how he feels I can improve the team,’ Maguire said.

‘It was a time when Manchester United were conceding a lot of goals.

‘I knew that there will always be scrutiny. I had to come into the team and help us improve, and that’s what we are now doing but we still have a long way to go.’

During his first few months at Manchester United, Maguire was faced with abuse from fans, pundits on social media and around the world.

However, the 28-year-old has now bounced back from all of that to become a top defender in the Premier League at Manchester United.
