Manchester United were very close to signing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano before the deal collapsed over a £200,000 fee, MySportDab reports.

The French defender was stranded at Old Trafford and could not complete the transfer.

Upamecano is known to be one of Manchester United’s top transfer targets.

Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to sign the RB Leipzig defender this summer, but the Red Devils decided that he was too expensive.

Now, he will face Manchester United next week in the second round of Champions League group stage matches this season.

However, According to The Sun, Upamecano could be a Manchester United player right now if the deal did not collapse five years ago.

Five years ago, Upamecano was available for less than £1million, with his former club Valenciennes ready to sell.

The defender, at 16-years-old, had travelled to Old Trafford to finalise his transfer, but was forced to return home.

Manchester United had offered to pay £500,000, but Valenciennes wanted £700,000 for the player.

The Red Devils ended the negotiations, and RB Leipzig signed the wonderkid for a bargain price.

Now, Manchester United remain interested again, but will have to pay a higher fee to sign him.

MySportDab understands that Liverpool are also interested in signing him, with Jurgen Klopp in search for a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch centre-back will now miss the rest of the current season due to an ACL injury.

Now, Liverpool could be in a good position to sign Dayot Upamecano in the January transfer window or Kabak from Schalke.
