Manchester United have missed out on some crucial cash injection after Ed Woodward’s stubbornness forced Roma to end negotiations about Chris Smalling’s transfer, MySportDab reports.

United had given AS Roma a Monday deadline, August 3 to get the transfer completed after the defender played 37 games for the Italian club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping to sign new players this summer but funds are tight because of the coronavirus impact on club finances.

Any player sale right now will enhance the amount the Red Devils have to spend in the market.

But, According to Sky Sport Italia, United will not get the £18million they wanted AS Roma to pay for Smalling.

Serie A clubs have been seriously affected by the global pandemic and spending such amount is not deemed right.

Manchester United’s Ed Woodward could have reduced his valuation to get the transfer done.

But the Woodward took a hard stance and refused to reduce that figure.

MySportDab understands that negotiations are still ongoing behind the scenes between Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United for Jadon Sancho.

However, Woodward has refused to pay the Bundesliga side’s £100m demand and has offered to pay £60m up front and the remaining payments in instalments.

And the additional £18m fee for Smalling would have been a huge boost to strengthen United’s transfer budget.

Chris Smalling has three years remaining on his United contract.
