Legendary Goalkeeper Iker Casillas has confirmed his plans to become the next president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), MySportDab reports.
The 38-year-old, who won the World Cup in 2010 with Spain will therefore retire as a footballer in the summer if elected as the new President of the Spanish FA.
Casillas has been a popular figure in the first-team squad and the board of directors at Porto after a heart attack in training in May last year.
Casillas, who played 167 matches for his country, had been set a March deadline by his doctor to know whether he should continue playing or retire from football and the plans before were that the legendary goalkeeper would return to his career with the Portuguese clun.
But announcing on Twitter, Casillas confirmed he would contest for the presidency against Rubiales:
‘Yes, I will contest for presidency of the Spanish FA when elections are ready. Together we will put our federation at the very too alongside the best football in the world: Spanish football.
‘I’ve notified the president of my club FC Porto of the decision and I want to express my deepest gratitude.
‘We’re working on everything with the highest respect. More than 23,000 voters await us in fair and transparent elections as 139 assembly members will make the crucial decision.
‘Thanks for the support and good wishes. Let’s do it!’
The next presidential elections were supposed to be held in late March, just ahead of Spain’s two friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands, but the new date to select a new president is yet to be confirmed.
But should Real Madrid Legend Casillas be elected for the four-year period till 2024, it would bring a stunning 20-year career in both Spain and Portugal to an end.
MySportDab understands Casillas joined Porto in 2015 from Real Madrid, where he came through their youth system to be one of the club’s most iconic players.
The goalkeeper won three Champions Leagues trophies, two Copa Dey Rey crowns and five La Liga titles.
