Aston Villa secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tottenham who suffered yet another horrible defeat as their season continues to go very bad.
The win gave Unai Emery’s side their first league victory of the season, while Spurs carry on in search of their first victory of the new campaign.
Tottenham started the match brightly and created several chances in the opening stages. Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was kept busy and produced a number of important saves to keep the score level.
Despite Spurs controlling large parts of the first half, they failed to find the breakthrough and were punished just before the interval. Villa took the lead in first-half stoppage time of the encounter.
In the 45+4th minute, Johan Manzambi reacted quickest inside the penalty area to score from close range after a dangerous Villa attack.
The move started when John McGinn delivered the ball back into the box following a defensive mistake from Spurs. Manzambi’s goal gave the visitors a valuable 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The home side thought they had equalized early in the second half when Mohammed Kudus found the net in the 60th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
That decision proved costly as Aston Villa doubled their advantage in the 67th minute. Nicolas Jackson finished brilliantly after combining with Johan Manzambi, who provided the assist.
Jackson controlled the ball well, beat his marker, and fired a low shot beyond goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to make it 2-0 for Villa. The away side continued to look dangerous on the counterattack and added a third goal in the 79th minute.
Emiliano Buendia produced the moment of the match with a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner. The Argentine midfielder found space outside the box and curled an excellent effort beyond Kinsky, leaving the Tottenham goalkeeper with no chance.
The goal appeared to have secured all three points for the visitors. Tottenham finally responded late in the game and ended their long wait for a Premier League goal this season.
In the 86th minute, Conor Gallagher scored after receiving a cutback from Mohammed Kudus. The midfielder calmly finished to reduce the deficit to 3-1 and give the home fans some hope.
Spurs continued to push forward during stoppage time and scored again in the 90+8th minute. Andy Robertson delivered a cross into the box and Jan Paul van Hecke rose highest to head the ball into the net, making it 3-2.
However, there was not enough time left for Tottenham to complete the comeback. When the final whistle arrived, Aston Villa celebrated an important away 3-2 victory.
Manzambi was one of the standout performers after scoring the opening goal and providing the assist for Jackson’s strike. Buendia’s spectacular effort also played a key role in the result.
The defeat increased pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi as his side remained without a league win after five matches.
Aston Villa left North London with a deserved 3-2 win after producing a clinical display, while Tottenham were left to regret missed chances and another disappointing Premier League result.
