Brentford produced a brilliant second-half display to thrash World Champions, Chelsea 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on a Friday night Premier League showdown.
The home side scored three goals after the break to secure a famous West London derby victory and continue their strong start to the Premier League season.
Chelsea enjoyed plenty of possession but failed to make their chances count, while Brentford were clinical when it mattered most during the second 45 minutes.
The first half ended goalless, although the Blues looked the more threatening side with numerous opportunities which they failed to make any of them count.
The visitors created a few promising moments through their attacking players, but the Bees stayed organized at the back and limited clear-cut opportunities.
Chelsea’s inability to find the breakthrough would later prove costly as Brentford grew into the game after the first half break.
The home side finally opened the scoring in the 61st minute. A corner kick caused problems inside the Blues penalty area, and Jaidon Anthony reacted quickest to finish from close range and make it 1-0.
The goal turned the game around giving the Bees the momentum they needed. The Blues tried to respond immediately, but Brentford’s defense remained solid and denied the Blues any route back into the match.
As Chelsea pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Brentford found more space on the counterattack. The Bees doubled their lead in the 83rd minute when Igor Thiago scored his first Premier League goal of the season.
The striker was in the right place to finish after the World Champions failed to deal with the danger inside their own box as things turned 2-0.
The goal effectively ended the visitors hopes of a comeback as the game carried on with little time left to be played between both teams.
The hosts completed the victory deep into stoppage time. In the 90+4th minute, Kevin Schade delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area.
The ball eventually reached Fabio Carvalho at the far post, and the midfielder made no mistake from close range to seal a convincing 3-0 win for Brentford.
Schade was officially credited with the assist for the final goal as the Bees celebrated a memorable night against Chelsea who failed to do much when they had their opportunities.
Xabi Alonso will be disappointed with both his team attacking and defensive performance. Despite seeing plenty of the ball, they struggled to create clear scoring chances and finished the match without finding the net.
The home side, on the other hand, showed excellent discipline, strong organization, and ruthless finishing in the second half which was all about them.
Their ability to take advantage of Chelsea’s mistakes proved to be the difference between the two sides.
The result moves Brentford further up the Premier League table and extends their impressive run of form under Keith Andrews.
For Xabi Alonso, the defeat increases pressure as his side continues to search for defensive stability and consistency in the league.
The Bees deserved the three points after a dominant second-half performance and will take plenty of confidence from such a convincing victory over their London rivals.
