South Africa 1-0 South Korea: Bafana Bafana Advance in World Cup After Epic Monterrey Upset

South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 at the Monterrey Stadium on Wednesday night, clinching a historic spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the very first time.

It was a memorable game for the Bafana Bafana thanks to Thapelo Maseko goal which was enough to make history for his national team as they advanced to the next round.

Entering the tournament, expectations for Bafana Bafana were tempered by a grueling opening 2-0 defeat to group leaders Mexico. However, under the guidance of manager Hugo Broos, the side displayed remarkable resilience.

After salvaging a draw against the Czech Republic, they arrived at their final Group A fixture knowing that only a win would guarantee their survival in the competition.

The atmosphere in Guadalupe was electric, with South Korea initially appearing as the favorites. Yet, it was South Africa who set the tempo, demonstrating a defensive discipline that stifled the Korean attack throughout the evening.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 63rd minute by the 22-year-old winger Thapelo Maseko.

After a patient build-up involving substitute Tshepang Moremi, Maseko received the ball on the edge of the box, shimmied inside, and fired a precise low strike through a defender’s legs, beating the South Korean goalkeeper at his near post.

For the final half-hour, South Africa absorbed intense pressure. The Korean side, desperate for an equalizer to keep their own knockout hopes alive, surged forward, but the South African defense bolstered by a series of calm interventions from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams held firm.

One of the major storylines of the match was the tactical gamble taken by South Korean manager Hong Myung-bo, who benched team captain and talisman Son Heung-min.

The decision to start the 33-year-old on the bench ended a remarkable run of 12 consecutive World Cup starts for the star.

While his introduction at halftime provided more involvement for the Asian side, the South Korean attack lacked the clinical edge required to bypass a determined South African unit.

With this victory, South Africa finishes second in Group A with four points. They now prepare for their first-ever Round of 32 knockout match, where they will face Canada on Sunday in Los Angeles.

For South Korea, the loss is a bitter pill to swallow. Finishing third in the group with three points, they must now wait on the results from other groups to see if they can advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

For South Africa, however, the night was one of pure elation. As the final whistle blew, the scenes on the pitch reflected years of hard work and belief.

South Korea still stand a chance of making it through, but it depends on what happens in the remain group stages game which could see other best losers come up with more points.
