FA Cup Final 2026: Semenyo Goal Defeats Chelsea as Man City Win 8th Title

Antoine Semenyo only goal was enough as Manchester City secured their eighth FA Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at a sun-drenched Wembley Stadium.

On a day where the stakes couldn’t have been higher, it was a moment of sheer audacity from Antoine Semenyo that separated the two sides, ensuring Pep Guardiola’s trophy cabinet continues to expand.

The first half followed a predictable script which saw Manchester City dominated possession while Chelsea remained compact and organized.

City’s midfield, bolstered by the return of Rodri, looked to dictate the tempo early. Within the first ten minutes, Omar Marmoush nearly found the breakthrough with a goalward flick that Robert Sánchez did well to smother.

Chelsea, however, were far from passive. Relying on the searing pace of Joao Pedro and the creative spark of Cole Palmer, the Blues looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Reece James, making a vital return to the starting XI, provided defensive stability and an outlet on the right, helping Chelsea weather the initial sky-blue storm.

By the interval, despite City having more shots on target, the deadlock remained unbroken, with both managers likely satisfied with their defensive shape.

The second half saw the intensity ramp up significantly. Chelsea emerged with renewed aggression, and for a period, seemed the more likely to score.

A goal-line clearance from Rodri was required to deny a powerful Moises Caicedo header, a moment that served as a wake-up call for the reigning Premier League contenders.

The decisive blow arrived in the 71st minute. Erling Haaland, who had been relatively quiet under the close watch of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana, found a yard of space on the right flank.

He whipped a low, driven cross into the box that appeared to be slightly behind the arriving Antoine Semenyo.

In a flash of instinctive genius, the £65 million signing executed a stunning back-heel flick that diverted the ball into the bottom-right corner, leaving Robert Sánchez rooted to the spot.

It was a goal worthy of any final, instantly etched into FA Cup folklore. Falling behind forced Chelsea to throw caution to the wind.

Just minutes after the opener, Enzo Fernandez had a golden opportunity to equalize. After a flick-on from a corner, the Argentine midfielder attempted a cheeky lob over James Trafford, but the ball landed agonizingly on the top of the netting.

Calum McFarlane turned to his bench, introducing the likes of Pedro Neto and Liam Delap to find a late savior. City, however, displayed the defensive resilience that has become their hallmark.

Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guéhi remained resolute at the back, while Trafford, though not forced into many saves, commanded his area with authority.

Even as five minutes of stoppage time were added, and the tension reached a fever pitch, City held firm to see out the win which handed them the Emirates FA Cup.

This victory marks Manchester City’s eighth FA Cup triumph and their third under Manager, Pep Guardiola.

With the League Cup already in their possession this season, City has become only the second club in English history to win both domestic cups in the same season on two separate occasions, the first being 2018/19.

For Chelsea, the defeat is a bitter pill to swallow. Despite a spirited performance that proved they can compete with the world’s best, they finish the match with what ifs specifically regarding the missed chances from Caicedo and Fernández.

As the blue ribbons are tied to the trophy for the second time in three years, Manchester City turns their attention back to a blistering Premier League title race against Arsenal.

For today, however, the blue half of Manchester celebrates a hard-earned victory at the Home of Football against Chelsea.
