Calvin Bassey has withdrawn from the Nigeria national football team squad ahead of their upcoming international friendlies due to injury, dealing a blow to the Super Eagles’ defensive plans, MySportDab Reports.
The Fulham FC defender was expected to play a key role during the four-nation invitational tournament in Antalya, Turkey, where Nigeria will face Iran and Jordan. However, the team confirmed via social media that Bassey has pulled out with a back injury.
While the extent of the injury has not been disclosed, his absence leaves head coach Eric Chelle with several defensive options, including Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Zaidu Sanusi, Igoh Ogbu and first-time call-up Emmanuel Fernandez.

Bassey’s withdrawal could also impact Fulham’s push for European qualification in the Premier League. The Cottagers currently sit ninth in the table with 44 points from 31 matches, with the Nigerian international making 23 appearances this season.
Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi has now linked up with the squad, completing the team ahead of their opening fixture.
The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Iran national football team on March 27, before taking on Jordan national football team four days later. Iran will also face Costa Rica national football team in their second match of the tournament.
Nigeria’s squad also includes key players such as Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles will aim to maintain momentum and build cohesion as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
