Lionel Messi is a major injury concern ahead of Inter Miami’s MLS season opener against LAFC on February 21 after the club confirmed the Argentine sustained a hamstring strain during preseason action, MySportDab Reports.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner scored his first goal of the calendar year in a friendly against Barcelona SC in Ecuador but was forced off after 58 minutes and watched the remainder from the bench.
Inter Miami later revealed that Messi missed training due to discomfort in his left hamstring, with medical examinations confirming the issue.

“Messi did not participate in training… due to a muscle strain in his left hamstring sustained during the match,” the club said in a statement, adding that his return will depend on his clinical and functional progress in the coming days.
The timing is far from ideal as Miami prepare to begin their campaign as defending MLS champions. Messi has dealt with a similar injury in the past, having missed multiple matches following a comparable setback last August, raising concerns over his availability for the league opener.
His absence has already impacted scheduling, with the club postponing their preseason friendly against Independiente del Valle in Puerto Rico.
The match, initially set for February 13, has been rescheduled for February 26 to allow time for recovery and ensure a stronger lineup for fans.
Messi expressed disappointment over the delay, acknowledging the anticipation surrounding the fixture while assuring supporters that the team remains committed to delivering a memorable experience when the match takes place.
Inter Miami are expected to proceed with preparations regardless of Messi’s status, but his potential absence would be a significant blow as they launch their title defense in Los Angeles.
