Rodri Tips PSG Duo Dembélé and Vitinha for Ballon d’Or Glory, Snubs Yamal

Manchester City star Rodri has backed Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha to battle it out for this year’s Ballon d’Or, tipping the Champions League-winning duo ahead of Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Rodri, who claimed the prestigious award last year, is not in contention this time around after missing much of the 2024–25 campaign with a long-term injury. His absence has left the field wide open, with no clear favourite in sight, unlike the era dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking on the upcoming announcement, Rodri insisted that PSG’s dominance this season cannot be ignored. “The Ballon d’Or is difficult,” the Spaniard said. “PSG has been the team of the season, and it would be hard not to give it to someone from that team. I’m happy for Luis Enrique. I’d like to see it go to Lamine or Pedri, but on sporting merit, it’s Dembélé or Vitinha.”

Dembélé’s transformation into a central striker proved decisive for the French champions, with the 27-year-old recording a staggering 35 goals and 16 assists across all competitions.

His attacking exploits played a central role in PSG’s European triumph and have made him the frontrunner in the race.

Vitinha, meanwhile, orchestrated play from midfield, controlling the tempo with composure and creativity.

Beyond his club exploits, the Portuguese international also inspired his country to Nations League glory, further strengthening his case.

Yamal, just 18, has emerged as Barcelona’s new talisman and is widely regarded as a future Ballon d’Or winner.

However, Rodri believes the youngster’s time may come later, with this year belonging to PSG’s stars.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place later this month, with anticipation building over who will claim football’s most coveted individual prize.
