Barcelona Secure First Summer Signing

Barcelona have secured their first signing this summer, MySportDab reports.

The La Liga champions are beefing up ahead of what is expected to tough campaign next season as their perennial bitter rivals Real Madrid step up for the competition as well.

Despite their strong showing in the just-concluded campaign, Barcelona are still pushing to reinforce and have been linked with top targets in the sports.

However, their first addition to the squad this summer is a goalkeeper. According to Fabrizio Romano, the La Liga giants have completed the move for Espanyol shot-stopper Joan Garcia.

The details of the report reveal the Catalan club have settled personal terms with Joan Garcia for a five-year contract and have informed Espanyol that the goalie’s £25million release clause will be paid in full next week.

Joan Garcia’s chances in the Barcelona goalkeeping options

Garcia was Espanyol’s No.1, but he is likely to go down the pecking order among Barcelona’s goalkeeping options.

Currently, Wojciech Szczesny remains the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Andre Ter Stegen, who lost his starting berth due to injury.

Notably, Wojciech Szczesny’s contract was set to expire this season, but Barcelona have offered him an extension following his stellar debut season.

While he has yet to sign the new deal, pingbacks from the team’s dressing room reveal he is likely to extend. Meanwhile, Ter Stegen, who has two years left on his deal, is also hopeful of returning to his No.1 spot.

With Garcia now in the picture, the competition for a starting role at Barcelona is expected to deepen. Garcia is aware of the situation, but had given the nod to the move notwithstanding.
