A miscommunication between goalkeeper Alisson Becker and defender Virgil van Dijk allowed Smallbone to slot the ball into the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute.
Liverpool responded with vigor after the break. In the 51st minute, Luis Díaz delivered a precise pass to Darwin Núñez, who calmly finished to level the score at 1-1.
Just three minutes later, Núñez was fouled inside the penalty area, earning Liverpool a spot-kick. Mohamed Salah stepped up and converted the penalty, putting the Reds ahead 2-1.
Liverpool continued to press, and in the 87th minute, they were awarded another penalty after a handball by Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara.
