Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed the full details behind his dramatic departure from Portugal’s October international camp, insisting a breakdown in trust with head coach Jorge Jesus led to his decision to leave.
Ronaldo released a lengthy statement explaining the events surrounding his controversial exit, while also confirming that he has no plans to retire from international football.
Ronaldo backs Jesus before relationship breaks down
The Portugal captain said he had initially been fully committed to Jesus’ plans after backing the appointment of the former Al Nassr manager.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus had told him he would play Portugal’s first and final matches of the international window, with his minutes managed because of his physical condition.
Ronaldo said he accepted the plan and remained focused on helping Portugal, but the situation changed during the team’s preparations for their meeting with Norway.
Ronaldo claims Jesus broke his promise
Ronaldo said an assistant approached him during lunch on the day of the Norway match and told him Jesus wanted to speak with him.
The Portugal captain claimed the manager then asked whether he was fit enough to play 30 minutes, despite the original plan being for Ronaldo to sit out the match.
“At lunchtime on the day of the match in Norway, an assistant to the head coach came to the table where the group was having lunch and informed me that the head coach wanted to speak to me,” Ronaldo said.
He accepted the request and was told to prepare for 30 minutes of action. However, Ronaldo spent the second half warming up without being introduced.
“The head coach had failed to keep his word,” Ronaldo stated.
Private meeting fails to resolve Portugal dispute
Ronaldo later held a private meeting with Jesus, with Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho also present.
The forward claimed they agreed that Jesus would clarify the situation publicly and explain that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time.
Ronaldo said the coach also accepted that it had been a mistake to make him warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch.
However, he claimed Jesus adopted a completely different tone during his subsequent press conference.
“The posture had nothing to do with our meeting; I heard expressions and an aggressiveness that I do not believe I deserved,” Ronaldo said.
The disagreement ultimately pushed Ronaldo towards leaving the national team camp.
Ronaldo explains why he walked away
Ronaldo said he decided to leave because he did not want to remain in an environment where he felt promises were no longer being kept.
“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further broken promise. For me the truth is still the most important thing in the relationship between people. No matter how much it may hurt, tell me the truth.”
Despite his frustration, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for his decision and apologised to Portugal’s players and supporters for leaving the camp.
He acknowledged that, as captain, his actions carried greater responsibility and said any punishment handed down by the Portuguese Football Federation should be accepted.
Ronaldo confirms Portugal retirement is not coming yet
Despite the fallout with Jesus, Ronaldo made it clear that his international career is not over.
The veteran forward revealed that he had previously prepared a letter announcing his retirement after the 2026 World Cup, but the Portuguese Football Federation persuaded him to reconsider.
Ronaldo now wants to continue competing for Portugal whenever he is physically fit.
“If I am physically well, playing for my club, hopefully with goals, after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”
Ronaldo also said he expects to have one or more farewell matches when his Portugal career eventually comes to an end.
For now, however, the 41-year-old remains committed to representing Portugal, leaving his latest dispute with Jesus as another chapter in a remarkable international career.
