Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Cole Palmer Sees Red As Spurs Win Derby

Tottenham secured a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, after a late own-goal from Mike Penders and a superb finish from Mathys Tel settled the London derby.

The Blues struggled to turn their chances into goals, while Spurs made the most of their opportunities in the closing stages to claim all three points.

The result gave Roberto De Zerbi’s side a memorable away win and left Xabi Alonso with plenty to think about after a disappointing performance and a red card for Cole Palmer.

Both teams started the game looking to take control, but Tottenham gradually grew into the contest and enjoyed more possession.

Chelsea attempted to use their pressing game to disrupt the visitors, although Spurs began to find spaces and create dangerous opportunities.

The host were without injured striker Joao Pedro, and his absence affected their attacking options. Cole Palmer tried to provide creativity, but the home side struggled to find the right final pass and make their promising moves count.

Spurs also had opportunities to take the lead in the first half. Omar Marmoush missed a good chance after Spurs worked the ball into a dangerous position, while Mathys Tel caused problems for the host defence with his movement and attacking runs.

Mike Penders was called into action on several occasions and made important saves to keep the score level. At the other end, Antonin Kinsky also produced key stops as the host looked to make their pressure count.

One of Chelsea’s best opportunities fell to Jordan Henderson, who failed to beat Kinsky after a promising attacking move. The midfielder had a chance to put the home side ahead, but the goalkeeper stood firm.

The teams went into the break with the score still 0-0, leaving the match finely balanced despite Tottenham’s growing control.

The game remained tight after the restart, with neither side able to find a breakthrough during the early stages of the second half.

The away side suffered a setback when James Maddison was forced off with an injury shortly after half-time. However, the visitors continued to push forward and eventually found the breakthrough in the 77th minute.

Mateus Fernandes delivered a corner into the Chelsea penalty area, where Penders attempted to deal with the delivery under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke.

The goalkeeper failed to make clean contact with the ball and punched it into his own net. Levi Colwill attempted to prevent the ball from crossing the line, but Tottenham were awarded the goal.

It was a painful moment for the Blues, who had worked hard to keep Spurs out for most of the match. Fernandes received credit for creating the dangerous situation with his corner, while Penders was left disappointed by the costly mistake.

Chelsea’s problems increased when Palmer was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge involving Conor Gallagher.

The dismissal left the home side with ten players and made their attempt to recover from the deficit even more difficult.

Palmer’s red card was a major turning point, as the World Champions lost an important attacking option during the closing stages.

The incident added to the frustration around Stamford Bridge, with the host needing to find an equaliser while playing with a numerical disadvantage.

Spurs took advantage of the situation and scored their second goal in the 87th minute. Tel produced an impressive individual run, driving forward before getting past the defensive pressure and firing the ball beyond Penders.

His finish secured the points for Spurs and ended Chelsea’s hopes of rescuing something from the match. Unlike the opening goal, which came from a goalkeeping error, Tel’s strike was a moment of individual quality that gave Tottenham a deserved cushion.

The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 win for Tottenham, with Penders’ own goal and Tel’s late strike deciding the London Derby encounter against Chelsea after 90 minutes.

Spurs ability to remain patient and take advantage of the Blues mistakes proved important. Fernandes played a key role in the opening goal, while Tel provided the finishing touch that completed the victory.

The missed opportunities, Penders’ error and Palmer’s dismissal were costly for Xabi Alonso’s side. Henderson’s first-half chance was particularly important, as taking the lead could have changed the direction of the game.

The result gives Tottenham a significant boost out of the relegation zone, while Chelsea must improve their finishing and discipline ahead of their next Premier League fixture.
