Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Bruno Guimaraes.
James Justin had given the visitors the lead, but Mikel Arteta’s side showed their quality to secure three important points in the Premier League.
The victory was a welcome response from the Champions after their defeat to Brighton before the international break. The away team made life difficult for the home side for much of the match.
However, Arsenal’s changes and improved attacking play helped them turn the game around. The Gunners started with the aim of putting pressure on the visitors.
Leeds defended well and looked dangerous on the counter-attack. The visitors created the first major chance when Noah Okafor’s effort took a deflection and went narrowly wide.
The Gunners struggled to find their rhythm during the opening stages and were caught offside several times. Noni Madueke provided a bright moment when he beat his marker on the left and delivered a cross into the box.
Kai Havertz met the ball with a header, but his effort went straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford. The visitors continued to threaten as the encounter carried on.
Anton Stach had a promising opportunity, but the ball was blocked by a teammate. Jayden Bogle also tested David Raya, who made important saves to keep the Champions in the game.
Gabriel Gudmundsson came close with an effort from the back post, forcing Raya into another good save. Despite the home side enjoying spells of possession, their opponent looked more dangerous in the first half, and both teams went into the break with the score at 0-0.
Leeds finally made their pressure count in the 55th minute. Gudmundsson delivered a low cross from the left that travelled across the home side penalty area.
James Justin arrived at the back post and fired the ball into the net to give the visitors a deserved 1-0 lead. Arsenal needed a quick response, and they found one seven minutes later.
The gunners equalised in the 62nd minute through Calafiori. Madueke sent a cross towards the far post, where Ben White headed the ball back across goal.
Calafiori was in the right position to finish from close range and make it 1-1. The goal changed the mood inside the Emirates Stadium and gave Arsenal fresh energy.
Arteta then made a triple substitution, bringing on Bruno Guimaraes, Viktor Gyokeres and Jurrien Timber to help his team take control. They completed their comeback in the 70th minute.
Martin Odegaard helped move the ball forward before the Gunners combined quickly around the Leeds defence. Declan Rice then produced an excellent backheel to set up Guimaraes on the edge of the penalty area.
The Brazilian midfielder struck a low shot into the bottom corner, leaving Trafford unable to stop it. The goal put them 2-1 ahead and completed a turnaround that took just 15 minutes from Justin’s opener.
Arsenal continued to create chances as Leeds struggled to respond. Bukayo Saka fired over when he had an opportunity to extend the lead, while Odegaard missed from close range after Rice created another opening.
Gyokeres also had a chance to score when Trafford and defender Tarik Muharemovic failed to deal with the ball cleanly, but the Swedish forward could not find the right angle to finish.
Saka had another opportunity in stoppage time after Gyokeres played him through on goal. However, he sent his effort wide, allowing Leeds to escape further damage before the final whistle.
The encounter came to a conclusion with Arsenal claiming a narrow 2-1 victory against Leeds United after 90 minutes of action played at the Emirates Stadium.
The match saw five yellow cards in total, with Arsenal receiving one and Leeds United receiving four. Odegaard was booked for Arsenal, while Tanaka, Ampadu, Muharemovic and Justin received bookings for Leeds.
The home side finished with 58 per cent possession and 13 shots, while Leeds recorded 11 attempts. The Gunners also had six shots on target compared with five from the visitors. Raya and Trafford each made four saves.
The Champions 2-1 victory moved them level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table at the time of the final whistle. Leeds, meanwhile, suffered their first league defeat of the season after a strong start to the campaign.
Although Arsenal were below their best for long periods, their second-half response proved decisive. Calafiori’s equaliser and Guimaraes’ winning goal secured a valuable comeback victory and gave Arteta’s team renewed confidence ahead of their next fixture.
