Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has taken a major step towards a future in football management after completing a postgraduate diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship in England.
The Coventry City forward announced his graduation on Tuesday, sharing pictures from the ceremony on social media after completing the programme at the PFA Business School with merit.
Awoniyi’s latest achievement adds to his growing involvement in football away from the pitch as he continues his playing career in England.
Awoniyi adds management qualification
The Global Football Sport Directorship programme prepares graduates for several areas of the modern football industry, including sporting strategy and operations, financial management, club governance and data analytics.
The course is also designed to equip participants with the skills required for high-level roles within football administration.
Awoniyi is among a growing number of footballers who have pursued education alongside their playing careers. Everton legend Tim Cahill and former Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta are also notable graduates of courses at the PFA Business School.
Several Nigerian players, including Wilfred Ndidi, Sone Aluko, Kelechi Iheanacho and William Troost-Ekong, have similarly invested in education during their football careers.
Super Eagles star building football legacy
Awoniyi’s interest in football management comes as little surprise given his activities away from professional football.
The striker runs a football academy in Kwara State and remains involved in its operations. He has also organised grassroots tournaments aimed at giving young footballers opportunities to develop their talents in his hometown of Ilorin.
His latest qualification could therefore prove valuable if he decides to pursue football administration or another leadership role after his playing career.
The Nottingham Forest striker spent several years playing across Europe before establishing himself in England. He joined Forest and made 103 appearances for the club before completing a summer move to Coventry City.
He received an emotional farewell from Nottingham Forest supporters at the City Ground before beginning the next chapter of his career.
Awoniyi faces Coventry challenge
While his latest achievement represents an important milestone away from the pitch, Awoniyi’s immediate focus remains on getting his career at Coventry back on track.
The Nigerian forward has endured a difficult start since moving to the club and was sent off during Coventry’s heavy 5-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.
The suspension means he will have time to reflect during the international break before returning to club action.
Awoniyi will now be hoping to regain his place in the Coventry side and make a positive impact once he becomes available again.
For now, his management qualification provides another indication that the Super Eagles striker is preparing for a future in football beyond his playing career.
