Defending champions Argentina were pushed to the brink by tournament debutants Cape Verde before eventually securing a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory to book their place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.
Lionel Messi marked his historic 30th World Cup appearance with another memorable performance, scoring the opening goal and providing two assists, while an unfortunate extra-time own goal from Diney Borges ultimately ended Cape Verde’s remarkable resistance.
The victory also carried special significance for Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni, who celebrated his 100th match in charge by guiding La Albiceleste into the next round, where they will face Egypt.

Argentina dominated possession from the opening whistle but initially struggled to break down a disciplined Cape Verde defence. Messi offered the first warning after 15 minutes when he dragged an effort narrowly wide before testing goalkeeper Vozinha with a long-range free-kick.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 29th minute through a moment of brilliance from the Argentine captain. Lisandro Martinez launched a superb long pass over the top, allowing Messi to race behind the defence before producing a delicate finish over the advancing Vozinha to hand the world champions the lead.
Rather than folding, Cape Verde responded with increasing confidence after the interval. The African side, making history by reaching the knockout stages in their first-ever World Cup appearance, began committing more players forward and were rewarded just before the hour mark.
Deroy Duarte capitalised on defensive hesitation inside the penalty area before drilling a low finish beyond Emiliano Martinez to level the contest and spark wild celebrations among the Cape Verde supporters.
Argentina immediately searched for a response. Messi was denied in a one-on-one situation by the outstanding Vozinha, who also reacted brilliantly moments later to claw away a quickly taken free-kick that appeared destined for the top corner.
With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, the contest moved into extra time, where the drama only intensified.
Just two minutes after the restart, Messi’s dangerous corner caused problems once again. Alexis Mac Allister flicked the delivery into the path of Lisandro Martinez, who blasted an unstoppable finish into the roof of the net to restore Argentina’s advantage.
Cape Verde refused to surrender.
Only minutes later, Sidny Cabral produced one of the finest goals of the tournament, curling a sensational strike into the top corner from distance to make it 2-2 and silence the Argentine fans.
As penalties loomed, Messi again proved decisive. His corner found Cristian Romero, whose flicked header appeared to be heading inside before taking a decisive deflection off Diney Borges and beating the helpless Vozinha for what proved to be the winning goal.
Cape Verde continued to fight until the final whistle, with Cabral forcing Emiliano Martinez into another important save from a late free-kick, but Argentina held firm to preserve their World Cup title hopes.
Although Cape Verde’s fairytale journey came to a heartbreaking end, Bubista’s side earned widespread admiration for pushing one of football’s greatest nations to the limit. Despite exiting the competition without recording a victory, their fearless displays throughout the tournament ensured they left the global stage with immense pride.
For Argentina, the performance exposed defensive vulnerabilities but also highlighted their resilience and ability to deliver under pressure. Messi once again inspired his country when it mattered most, while Scaloni’s century as head coach ended with progression to the last 16.
La Albiceleste will now turn their attention to a challenging clash against Egypt, knowing significant improvements will be required if they are to successfully defend their World Cup crown after surviving an unforgettable scare against Cape Verde.
