Portugal will launch their quest for a first-ever FIFA World Cup title when they face Congo DR in their Group K opener on Wednesday in Houston.
With one of the strongest squads at the tournament, Roberto Martinez’s side arrive in the United States carrying significant expectations.
Portugal have enjoyed an impressive build-up to the competition, recording friendly victories over the USA, Chile and Nigeria, while many bookmakers consider them among the leading contenders to challenge for the trophy.

Despite producing some of the finest players in football history, Portugal have never lifted the World Cup. Their best finish came in 1966 when they placed third, while a fourth-place finish in 2006 remains their only other appearance in the final four.
The Selecao were eliminated in the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago and will be determined to go further this time.
Much of the spotlight will once again fall on Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old captain is set to make his 229th appearance for Portugal and will look to add to his remarkable tally of 143 international goals.
Ronaldo endured a disappointing World Cup in 2022, scoring just once, and will be eager to make a stronger impact in what could be his final appearance at the tournament.
Portugal’s squad is packed with talent across every position. Bruno Fernandes is expected to play a key creative role, while Paris Saint-Germain trio Nuno Mendes, Joao Neves and Vitinha arrive fresh from helping the French club win the UEFA Champions League.
Congo DR, meanwhile, are making their first World Cup appearance in 52 years after defeating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff. Sebastien Desabre’s side have shown resilience in recent months and will be hoping to spring a surprise against one of the tournament favourites.
The Leopards possess several experienced players, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Chancel Mbemba and Arthur Masuaku. In attack, Yoane Wissa and Cedric Bakambu will carry the goalscoring responsibility as Congo DR seek a positive result.
While Congo DR are expected to be competitive, Portugal’s superior quality, experience and attacking firepower should prove decisive. A winning start would strengthen their position at the top of Group K before tougher tests against Colombia and Uzbekistan.
Prediction: Portugal 3-0 Congo DR
Portugal have too much quality throughout their squad and should begin their World Cup campaign with a comfortable victory.
