Marc Cucurella Eyeing Exit with Atlético and Barcelona on High Alert

Marc Cucurella has become a focal point of intense transfer speculation with the defender weighing his options ahead of the summer transfer window.

Once considered an untouchable figure at Stamford Bridge, the Spanish international now finds himself at a pivotal career crossroads, with reports indicating a genuine willingness to depart West London this summer.

The narrative surrounding Cucurella has shifted dramatically over the past several months. Earlier this year, the 27-year-old was reportedly in line for a new, long-term contract extension, with the club eager to reward his consistency.

However, the atmosphere at Chelsea has been turbulent with everything that is currently going on with the club.

The departure of manager Enzo Maresca in January 2026, a figure with whom Cucurella had forged a strong professional bond, reportedly had a significant negative impact on the player.

Cucurella himself has spoken candidly about the big impact Maresca’s exit had on the squad, noting that the team had been operating in a state of high cohesion under his leadership.

Since that transition, and amid a challenging end to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, rumors regarding his departure have gained serious momentum.

From a tactical perspective, the landscape at Chelsea is also changing. With the club reportedly looking to evolve its playing style, questions have emerged regarding how Cucurella fits into future blueprints.

The arrival of younger defensive reinforcements, such as Jorrel Hato, provides Chelsea with ready-made cover, potentially lowering the threshold for the club to sanction a move for the Spaniard.

Furthermore, reports suggest that if the tactical setup shifts toward a 3-4-3 formation, there may not be a natural, optimal role for Cucurella, who has historically excelled in more traditional full-back or left-sided defensive configurations.

The interest in the defender is significant, particularly from his homeland. La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid have all been linked with the player.

According to the Athletic Football, they confirmed the recent news concerning Cucurella exit saying: “Multiple clubs have been in touch with people working on behalf of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella about a possible summer move.

“Sources briefed on the matter — who spoke under condition of anonymity, like others in this article, to protect relationships — say he is willing to leave Chelsea after a frustrating season that saw the club finish 10th in the Premier League.

“Cucurella signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge last summer.

For a defender of his experience, having navigated the high-pressure environment of the Premier League and international football, a return to Spain could offer a fresh challenge and a potential return to the stylistic familiarity of La Liga.

While the player is reportedly open to a departure, Chelsea’s board is likely to balance the need for a squad overhaul against the loss of one of the few remaining experienced leaders in the dressing room.

Any potential sale would also need to align with the club’s financial strategy, especially given his high-profile arrival in years past.

While Marc Cucurella has expressed a desire to be part of a team competing for major honors, the combination of his dip in form following the managerial change and the club’s evolving tactical needs suggests that a parting of ways may be the most logical outcome for all parties involved.
