Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as their new permanent manager, with the former midfielder signing a contract until the summer of 2028.
Carrick, who initially stepped in as interim boss in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, has now been handed the role on a full-time basis after an impressive run that transformed United’s season.

His early impact immediately shifted perceptions inside the club, with a 2–0 win over Manchester City and a 3–2 victory over Arsenal highlighting a strong start to his interim spell. That momentum carried into a seven-game unbeaten run that convinced United’s hierarchy to make his appointment permanent.
Across 16 matches in charge, Carrick recorded 11 wins and guided United to a third-place Premier League finish, securing Champions League qualification and stabilising a season that had been drifting before his arrival.
Club officials had originally intended to delay any long-term managerial decision until the end of the campaign, but Carrick’s performances made the situation impossible to ignore. His tactical approach and improved performances from key players were seen as key factors in United’s late-season surge.
Attention will now turn to squad planning ahead of next season, with midfield identified as a key area for reinforcement. Reports suggest Casemiro could leave, while Manuel Ugarte’s future also remains uncertain, leaving Kobbie Mainoo as the only established central midfielder in the squad.
Carrick is expected to play a major role in shaping recruitment decisions, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson among the players being closely monitored as United look to rebuild the core of their midfield.
The new manager’s tactical identity, which prioritises control in midfield and structured possession, is expected to influence United’s transfer strategy significantly over the coming months.
Carrick’s appointment marks a new era at Old Trafford, with the club now fully committing to a long-term project under a manager who has already earned the trust of both players and supporters through his early impact.
