Van Dijk Late Header Gives Liverpool Derby Victory Over Everton

Virgil van Dijk powered home a stoppage-time header to give Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 Merseyside Derby victory over Everton, keeping their Champions League push firmly on track.

The Toffees had a goal called off by VAR as they bow out against Liverpool in a match which almost ended with both teams sharing one point each.

Liverpool started the match in control as they pushed early while forcing Jordan Pickford to come gather the ball.

Under the first five minutes, it was the Premier League Champions who had more ball possession as things carried on.

The first real opportunity came in the 6th when Beto sends a header towards goal, but Giorgi Mamardashvili was there to comfortably make a save.

Beto had another opportunity on goal in the 16th minute, but his effort was never close to hitting the target as play carried on.

It was all about Liverpool dominating play with 52 percent ball possession compared to Everton 48 after 20 minutes played. Jordan Pickford was cautioned in the 23rd minute for dissent.

In the 26th minutes, James Tarkowski came close with a header which Giorgi Mamardashvili was there to make a save.

Iliman Ndiaye scored in the 27th minute, but VAR came into play to check if there was something wrong. Unfortunately, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Cody Gakpo almost scored the opener, but his attempt was not good enough to beat Jordan Pickford who made a save.

Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead 0-1 in the 29th minute through a left footed strike which as assist by Cody Gakpo.

Jake O’Brien almost cost his team a goal after a defensive blunder in the 45th minute, but it was cleared out before any damage was done.

Alexander Isak directed a shot on target, but the keeper saved it during additional time. Dwight McNeil had the last attempt before the first half came to an end 0-1.

Curtis Jones committed a defensive blunder in the 49th minute which the Premier League Champions narrowly escaped.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall created the perfect assist in the 54th minute which saw Beto finished off neatly with his right foot which made it 1-1.

Giorgi Mamardashvili went down injured in the 55th minute and he had to receive medical attention on the field.

Unfortunately, he could not continue as Freddie Woodman came off the bench as his replacement in the 58th minute.

In the 59th minute, Cody Gakpo failed to find the target after taking a wonderful shot from outside the box against Everton.

Dwight McNeil had a strike from outside the box in the 60th minute, but it was nowhere near getting his side a goal.

Cody Gakpo saw his shot on goal being hacked off the goal line by James Tarkowski in the 61st minute as the scoreline stayed 1-1.

James Tarkowski made a defensive blunder in the 64th minute, but he was saved by Vitaliy Mykolenko who made a tackle and won the ball.

Beto went down injured in the 71st minute which saw played being stopped. Alexander Isak left the pitch and was replaced by Rio Ngumoha.

Beto could not continue the match after his injury which saw him being replaced by Thierno Barry in the 73rd minute.

Dwight McNeil came off for Tyrique George who had the opportunity to play in the 80th minute while things stayed 1-1.

Cody Gakpo and Florian Writz were both removed and replaced by Alexis Mac Allister and Jeremie Frimpong in the 84th minute.

The fourth official put up 11 minutes of time to be added between both teams after they hit the 90 mark with the scoreline staying 1-1.

Play carried on until the 10th minute of addition time which saw Virgil van Dijk scored a brilliant header. He was assisted by Dominik Szoboszlai as the reds made it 1-2.

The match came to an end with Liverpool snatching all three points at Everton expense after a heated 90 minutes which could have gone anyway.

This match is a massive boost for Liverpool chances of making Champions League next season as they go seven points off Chelsea in 5th position.

Mohamed Salah who scored the opening goal was pleased with how things ended for Liverpool.

Salah reacted: “I hope I keep scoring and I help the team qualify for Champions League so I can leave the right way.

Liverpool will look to maintain their run as they are guaranteed a Champions League spot if they finish fifth.

The Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool had it moments which everything had to end in favor of the Premier League Champions.
