UEFA REACT To PSG Vs Newcastle Controversial Penalty

Newcastle United nearly ran out with a famous win at Parc des Princes before a stoppage-time penalty pegged back the English side to a point, MySportDab reports.

Center referee Szymon Marciniak sparked a barrage of reactions after he awarded the penalty to PSG under very controversial circumstances.

Newcastle United player Tino Livramento actually handled the ball with his arm but it was not intentional.

His hand was on a natural position and the most controversial of all was the fact that the ball bounced on his chest before dropping on his arm – that alone has attracted widespread criticism of Marciniak and the VAR official.

Marciniak previously signaled for both teams to play on despite appeals by PSG players before VAR officials called for a review of the decision.

After taking to the pitchside monitor and reviewing the incident, the Polish referee upturned his on-field decision and pointed to the spot.

It was a late lifeline for PSG and Kylian Mbappe made it count firing into the roof of the net to level the score and salvage a point for the Ligue 1 champions.

The decision to award the penalty has been greeted with widespread criticism and UEFA have been forced to react to the incident.

According the Mirror, UEFA have removed the VAR official Kwaitkowski from VAR duties due to the penalty decision.

Kwaitkowski was expected to be at the VAR room again in today’s Champions League between Real Sociedad and Salzburg.

The decision of UEFA to remove the embattled VAR official is clear evidence that the awarded penalty was a mistake and a costly one at that.

PSG salvaged a point from the Champions League minnows at the death as Mbappe converted the spotkick to level the score.

Newcastle United will need a win against AC Milan in their last group game, and hope PSG lose to Borussia Dortmund before they can qualify for quarterfinals.
