Leicester City 2-0 Arsenal, Gunners Bow To Verdy And Maddison Goals

Unai Emery's woes continued as Arsenal fell to a 2-0 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Mesut Ozil was handed a second successive start as Unai Emery opted to keep the three-person defense, despite drawing with Vitoria in the Europa League in midweek.

After an even start to the match, Leicester felt they should have had a penalty just 10 minutes in.

Ben Chilwell's free-kick found Caglar Soyuncu at the far post, and the Turkish defender went down under the challenge from Matteo Guendouzi, but referee Chris Kavanagh awarded no penalty. Even more surprising was the lack of intervention from VAR for what appeared to be a clear penalty.

The Gunners almost capitalized on their slice of good fortune, only for Alexandre Lacazette to strike wide from six yards from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's cross.

Leicester began to get a hold of the game and had chances to break the deadlock with Ayoze Perez going close and Jamie Vardy somehow failing to make contact on the end of the Spaniard's cross with the goal at his mercy.

The hosts picked up from where they left off after the break and were denied by the woodwork when Wilfried Ndidi rattled the crossbar after getting on the end of Ricardo Pereira's cross.

Arsenal then had their celebrations cut short after being denied by the offside flag. Ozil's sublime pass found Kolasinac on the left flank, and his inch-perfect cross found Aubameyang. He beat Kasper Schmeichel, but the flag was correctly raised.

But Leicester wasn't to be denied - and it was undoubtedly the best movie of the game that broke the deadlock. Pereira found Maddison, who laid off to Tielemans, and the Belgian's excellent square pass was swept home by Vardy.

That goal opened the floodgates somewhat, and just seven minutes later, the Foxes went two up. Pereira was involved again, finding Vardy at the far post, and when he laid it back to Maddison, the 22-year-old thundered his low effort into the corner.

Chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning," aimed at Emery, emerged from both corners of the stadium. The Spaniard responded by sending on Nicolas Pepe and Joe Willock, but the damage was already done.

A 10th league away defeat in 19 games for Arsenal, and Emery faces an uncertain future after another poor display.
