Naomi Osaka Wins 2019 Women's Australian Open (Photos)

Japan Ace Naomi Osaka has won the 2019 Australian Open after defeating Petra Kvitova 6-7 (2-7) 7-5 4-6 in the final.

The fourth seed broke for 2-1 in the decider, then served out to clinch victory in Melbourne.

Eighth seed Kvitova, 28, was bidding for her first major title since being stabbed in a knife attack.

Osaka had to serve out the match at 5-4 in the decider when it could all have been over nearly an hour previously, but this time she did so to fifteen with total commitment.

The Australian Open has acquired a habit of producing excellent women’s finals and this was another one.

Naomi Osaka: "Erm, hello. Sorry, public speaking isn't my strong point so I hope I can get through this!

"I wouldn't have wanted this to be our first match but huge congratulations to you [Kvitova] and your team. You are amazing and I am honoured to have played you in a Grand Slam final.

"Thank you for coming and watching. It's really hot all the time."

Petra Kvitova: "It's crazy. I can't believe I have just played in the final of a Grand Slam again.

"It was a great final. Well done Naomi. To her team as well, you really played well. Congratulations for being world number one as well."
